Pencil by 53 occupies a fuzzy pencil-shaped hole in my soul. A stylus with an eraser? And that knows the difference between stylus and finger for rapid smudge action? That's ergonimically designed? Dawww, I love you too, 53!
That said, the Paper app's only saving grace is that every last Pencil feature works with it and unlocks the (limited) premium tools.
The color picker is finicky. Though the mixing action letting you slide back and forth between two colors with a rotary phone dialing motion is interesting, it's difficult and requires multiple taps to save swatches or pick an existing canvas color.
The pinch zoom that opens a magnifying glass over an area feels about as graceful as holding a real magnifying glass over a piece of paper while drawing. It's especially difficult around the edges as you try to slide the glass half over the edge and it bounces instead.
The journal mode is cute, but complicates things. How do I find drawing #383?
Share my art in the app? Then let other people draw over it and call it theirs? I'm sorry, what? You want to make that process even easier?
I could doodle and make loose sketches with this app, if I had to and my Pencil stylus was on hand, but why? Although I love love love how responsive/versatile/comfortable this stylus is, I feel like I spent the whole drawing fighting to work around Paper's attempts to copycat pencil and marker tools. I'm not always methodical but I like to have fine control over my edges and colors. In my test drawing though I ended up blurring almost everything, losing what could have been great texture, to minimize those dreaded faux "watercolor" edges.
If you're a fellow control freak, I suggest going with an app that does control very well. Check out ArtRage. This app comes with many presets for each tool but also allows you to adjust and save your own. If you own the (cheap) desktop software, you can also repaint your images at a higher resolution, fix colors, and add fine details.
Caveat: I think this type of app was made with the sketcher in mind. A fashion designer or other creative with a loose, quick feel and a light touch could get a lot of out Paper.
Verdict: ArtRage, please(!) fully integrate with this stylus. And other styluses. I wouldn't mind having a whole bag full of different stlyii with different shapes, sizes and effects.
